Joe is and has been the President of the law firm and Chairman of the Management Committee since the early 1990’s. His practice focuses on complex commercial and personal litigation and white-collar criminal defense. His clients have included IBM (product liability issues); Bristol Myers Squibb (antitrust claim); the American Petroleum Institute (MTBE litigation); Shaw's Supermarkets, the Passamaquoddy Indian Tribe, and numerous other individual and corporate clients relating to a variety of complex commercial litigation matters and governmental investigations.
Prior to joining the firm, Joe was a trial attorney with the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice where he tried tax cases (criminal and civil) and political corruption cases in dozens of federal courts around the country. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Maine until 1989. During this time period he continued to be lead trial counsel in a large number of federal civil and criminal matters in the District of Maine.
Joe received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Tufts University (magna cum laude, 1971) and his law degree from Georgetown University (1976). He has been a lecturer at numerous Justice Department seminars around the nation and at many continuing legal education programs for both local and national groups concerning various aspects of state and federal trial practice. He has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America for commercial litigation and white-collar criminal defense law and New England Super Lawyers for commercial litigation and white collar criminal defense for an extended period of time.
