Mert practices in the area of estate planning and probate.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.  He has been a lecturer before various legal and philanthropic organizations on estate planning issues with an emphasis on planned giving.

Mert received his B.A. from Bowdoin College, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa (1950), and his L.L.B. from George Washington University Law School (1955) where he was on the staff of the Law Review.  He is admitted to practice in the State of Maine and before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the United States District Court in Maine.

Mert currently serves on the Boards of the Margaret Chase Smith Library, Hospice of Southern Maine, Scarborough Public Library, Tate House Museum and several private foundations.  He has been appointed by Governor John Baldacci to serve on the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Dirigo Health program for the State of Maine.  He formerly served on the Boards of Bowdoin College, Maine Medical Center, Portland Museum of Art, Maine Community Foundation, Southern Maine Technical College Foundation, Hospice of Maine and Maine Life Care Retirement Community, Inc.  He has received Honorary Doctor of Law degrees from Bowdoin College, Northwood University and St. Joseph's College.
